Print Quality and Speed

The L3250 uses Epson's Heat-Free technology. The print head doesn't heat the ink to fire it, so there is no warm-up before a job and the printer draws little power: Epson rates it at 12 W while working, 4.5 W on standby and 0.7 W asleep.

Print resolution goes up to 5,760 x 1,440 dpi, which keeps small text in assignments and invoices crisp. In Epson's standard speed test (ISO/IEC 24734) it prints up to 10 black or 5 colour pages a minute. In draft mode, when you only need a quick copy, it reaches up to 33 black or 15 colour pages a minute.

003 Ink Tanks and Running Cost

The L3250 uses Epson 003 ink bottles in black, cyan, magenta and yellow. You pour each bottle into its tank on the front of the printer, and the clear tank windows show how much ink is left at a glance.

A single black bottle prints up to 4,500 pages and a set of colour bottles up to 7,500 pages, based on Epson's ISO test pages. Real numbers depend on how much of each page is covered, but because one set of bottles lasts thousands of pages, the cost per page stays low. This is the main reason people move from cartridge printers to an EcoTank.

How to Connect the Epson L3250 to Wi-Fi

There are two ways to connect the L3250 to Wi-Fi. The easiest is the Epson Smart Panel app, which walks you through setup on your Android phone or iPhone. If your router has a WPS button, you can also connect using the buttons on the printer:

• Hold the WPS button on your router until its security light flashes.
• Hold the Wi-Fi button on the printer for at least five seconds, until the two lights flash one after the other.
• When the light stays on, the printer is connected.
• If both lights flash together, the connection failed. Press the printer's Wi-Fi button to clear it, restart the router, move it closer to the printer and try again.

Printing from Your Phone or Laptop

With no router at all, Wi-Fi Direct lets up to 8 phones, tablets or laptops connect straight to the printer. That suits a small office, a shop counter or a home where the internet is off. Epson Smart Panel handles printing, scanning and ink checks from your phone, and Epson iPrint and Email Print are also supported.

To use it with a laptop, connect the USB cable or join the laptop and printer to the same Wi-Fi network, then install the Epson L3250 driver (see Drivers and Software below).

Scanning and Copying

The scanner is a flatbed with a 1,200 x 2,400 dpi sensor and takes originals up to 216 x 297 mm, just over A4. It handles ID copies, certificates, receipts and handwritten notes. To scan a document, place it face down on the glass, lined up with the corner mark, then scan from Epson ScanSmart on a computer or from the Smart Panel app on your phone.

Care: Ink Levels and Print-Head Cleaning

Check the ink by looking at the tanks. Epson warns that printing for a long time with ink below the lower line can damage the printer, so refill before it gets there.

If prints show faint lines or gaps, run a nozzle check and clean the print head using the printer's buttons:

• Load A4 plain paper and turn the printer off.
• Turn it on while holding the Stop button, and let go when the power light flashes. A nozzle check pattern prints.
• If some lines are missing, hold the Stop button for five seconds until the power light flashes. Head cleaning starts.
• When the light stops flashing, print the pattern again. Repeat until all lines print.

Don't turn the printer off or open the front cover while it cleans. Cleaning uses ink, so if three rounds don't fix it, leave the printer for at least 12 hours before trying again.
